CAS Reflections…
The Year 12 Thailand trip is a certain highlight for all involved. In 2010 the trip will take place from Sunday, 21st February until 7th March, 2010 and two locations will be visited: (1) Prem Center in Chiang Mai and (2) Maekok River Village Resort in Chiang Rai. The activities that the students will be involved in will include:
Biology Fieldwork
IB Biology requires that each student studies Ecology at both Standard and Higher level. The Ecology Unit focuses on the impact that humans have on ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity, both very important global issues in today’s world. On the trip Biology students will benefit greatly from hands on experience of learning field study techniques directly, rather than just reading about them.
Environmental Systems and Societies
The Environmental Systems and Societies element will include the examination of many different ecosystems directly by surveying and comparing their biotic and abiotic components. The itinerary is comprehensive and will allow students a chance to apply their knowledge from the course into practice in the field. The programme will also introduce new techniques and methods for exploring and studying the world in which we live.
Geography
The IB Geography course requires students to undertake one Fieldwork Investigation for Internal Assessment (IA) that is related to one theme from the IB course. The theme that will be investigated is “Drainage Basins and Their Management”. The trip provides an invaluable opportunity for the students to impart the knowledge gained on the IB Geography course into a real-life scientific study. New skills and techniques of data collection, interpretation and analysis are acquired along with the ability to work part as a team towards a common goal. The transferable skills acquired will be a great asset when students pursue their academic careers at university.
Group 4 Science Project
The group 4 project is a group based project which all year 12 students must complete. Students will be allocated into research groups that contain a student from each area of science: Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology and Physics. Each group will analyse and complete experimental work on a particular scientific problem that is related to a common theme. The theme for this year’s group 4 project is “The Forest Environment”.
Community Service Project
Students will trek to a Hilltribe village, spend the night with a Thai family and learn about hilltribe history and culture. Students will learn about quality of life, the influence of western culture and will also serve via a community action project (e.g. constructing bridges, roads, playground building, etc.).
Working Together Course
Students will participate in a three-day programme lead by an authorized consultant of Macdonald Associates Consultancy Ltd. The students will develop skills in team leadership and team membership. Students will understand team process, team culture, work, values, power and authority. Students will reflect on their team’s and their own behavior during video reviews of team problem solving; have fun attempting challenging outdoor team tasks; apply learning in adventure programs and participate in inter-school challenges.
Elephant Camp
The Elephant Nature Park is a unique conservation project that provides a sanctuary and elephant rescue center. Students will learn about elephant conservation, elephants’ role in traditional Thai culture, jungle herbs and general animal conservation. Students will also have an opportunity to feed and wash sick and injured elephants.
Outdoor Challenge
Students will learn about the specific safety issues inherent in rock-climbing, rock-climbing equipment and its uses, basic climbing knots, rock climbing language, belaying, top-roping, basic climbing movement and basic rappelling. Also hiking and mountain biking riding activities are planned.
Orphanage Visit
Students will have the opportunity to make a huge difference to the lives of orphans in the Chiang Mai area by donating toys, clothing, educational materials and by sharing much needed love through games and friendship.
Khantoke Dinner
Students will participate in a special ceremonial dinner of northern Thai cuisine, and will be treated to a performance of Lanna drumming and dancing, including the Victory Drum Dance and the Fire Dance.
Thai Cooking Course
Thai cuisine is one of the country’s cultural heritages which has been passed on through generations. It is renowned internationally to be one of the best cuisines in the world. Students will enjoy learning how to cook with genuine and traditional Thai recipes which are properly and accurately transferred together with secrets, tips and tricks.
